Mary Sibande urodziła się w 1982 roku w Barberton w Mpumalanga (RPA), mieszka i pracuje w Johannesburgu. Jest absolwentką Uniwersytetu w Johannesburgu (2007), a jej prace były prezentowane na wielu wystawach o randze międzynarodowej m.in. na 54 Biennale w Wenecji (2011). Jest laureatką wielu prestiżowych nagród m.in. Young Artist Standard Bank (2013). Prace Sibande znajdują się m.in. w kolekcjach Galerii Narodowej i Standard Bank South Africa,w Johannesburgu, Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas i Norton Museum of Art, Florida w Stanach Zjednoczonych.
Mary Sibande w swoich pracach podejmuje tematykę płci, klas społecznych i rasy. Tworzy rzeźbiarskie, pełnopostaciowe figury czarnoskórych kobiet, stanowiących alter ego artystki. Postać Sophie często przywdziewa żołnierskie fioletowe, turkusowe i niebieskie mundury, albo ukazana jest ogromnych sukniach, przypominających kobiece stroje białej burżuazji w RPA. Rzeźby-instalacje są także fotografowane, a artystka często sama wciela się w postać Sophie.
