Uche Okeke urodził się 30 kwietnia 1933 roku w Nima w Nigerii. Już we wczesnej młodości zaczął rysować. Ukończył Fine Art at Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, obecny Ahmadu Bello University w Zarii. Jeszcze jako student zainicjował wraz Yusufem Grillo, Brucem Onobrakpeya’em i Demasem Nwoko Zaria Art Society (1958) oraz otworzył centrum kulturowe na Kafanchan na 30 Ibadan Street, które następnie przekształciło się w Instytut Asele, Nimo (1958). Jest założycielem ruchu artystycznego Nsukka. Od 1970 roku jest wykładowcą Wydziału Sztuk Pięknych Uniwersytetu Nigeryjskiego.
Jest laureatem wielu prestiżowych nagród i wyróżnień przyznawanych przez środowisko międzynarodowe, m.in.: Federal Government Award for distinguished service in the Arts and Culture Sector (2009), Presidential award of MFR by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2001), British Council Bursary Award (1973), Illustrator of the Year 1972, for Tales of Land of Death, Igbo Folk Tales, published by Doubleday, New York, awarded by National UNESCO Commission’s Book of the Year competition (1972), First place Esso Inc., Nigerian Independence calendar design competition, Lagos (1959), Out-of-doors painting award by the Head of Department of Fine Art, NCAST, Zaria (1957). Prace Uche Okeke znajdują się w zbiorach wielu kolekcji muzealnych i instytucji na całym świecie, m.in.: National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution w Waszyngtonie, National Gallery of Art, Abuja, Nigeria; Staatliche Graphische Sammlung, Monachium, Niemcy; Tate Modern Gallery, Liverpool, Wielka Brytania; Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria; Dolly Fitterman Art Gallery Inc, Minneapolis, USA.
Wczesne prace Uche Okeke wykonywał piórkiem i atramentem tworząc syntetyczne portrety, odwołujące siędo tradycyjnych opowieści ludu Igbo. Jego gwasze zostały opublikowane w Opowieściach z krainy śmierci (Tales of Land of Death, 1971). Okeke stworzył obrazy duchów Igbo, mitycznych postaci, i przebierańców sięgając do różnych mediach.
